A study by the David Grant Medical Center (Travis Air Force Base) and the University of the Pacific (Stockton California) that measured vital signs for 24 hours after the participants drank caffeine alone and energy drinks that included caffeine.
Heart Irregularities Developed After Consuming Energy Drinks
An EKG change known as a QTc prolongation that is sometimes associated with life-threatening arrhythmias developed after the participants drank energy drinks but not after drinking just caffeine. Because of these EKG changes, some energy beverages have been banned.
Blood Pressure Was Also Affected
Blood pressure increased by about 1 point after drinking caffeine. However, blood pressure was found to increase by almost 5 points after drinking the energy drink.
A Dangerous Blend
The manufacturers of energy drinks often point to the fact there there is no more caffeine in an energy drink than in a premium cup of coffee. However, these drinks not only include caffeine, but typically contain a “trade secret” energy blend that typically consists of stimulants and other additives. Some of these are not FDA-approved.
The problem is that we look at these drinks as being worrisome for those with heart conditions. But what about those people who have unknown heart conditions? More research needs to be done on the role energy drinks plays with our bodies.
