Some of the most common foods we enjoy are the same ones that can trigger migraine headaches. These headaches are the result of specific changes within the brain. It’s not unusual for the severe headaches to be accompanied by sensitivity to smells, light, or sounds.
Caffeine is a very complicated compound. If you ingest too much, you can get a migraine. But, caffeine is also addicting, and withdrawal can cause headaches as well.
6. Cured Meats
Curing is a widespread method of food preservation. Nitrate is utilized to preserve these foods. When this is broken down into nitric oxide in the bloodstream, the vessels in our brain can dilate.
5. Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners were thought to be a godsend when they first appeared on the market. But, as time went on, scientists found they had side effects, including migraines. It’s now thought that real sugar may be better for those that are watching their weight (and are not diabetic.)
4. Table Salt
Table salt is made from sodium chloride. Although sodium is essential for a healthy life, if you overeat, it can trigger a migraine.
Chocolate has caffeine which can both be a headache trigger or inhibitor. Scientists think the amino acid tyramine may be the culprit. But, it’s also believed that some women crave chocolate during stress and hormonal changes. Both hormonal changes and stress can trigger headaches.
2. Fast Food
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a type of acid that exists naturally in our body. However, this chemical is also added to foods to extend freshness. Unfortunately, MSG is considered to trigger migraines.
Tyramine the amino acid responsible for headaches is present in high amounts in alcohol. Red wine and beer are also considered triggers. Alcohol also dehydrates, and that can cause head pain as well.
